Instructions for Template and Primer Submission

Step 1: Choose a naming convention for your Templates and Primers

Determine a naming convention for your templates and primers. A good naming convention is one that will minimize confusion both for you as well as the technician who sequences your samples.
Names should be no longer than five characters. The name length restriction is designated by the ABI sequencing software, so we can not accept longer names under any circumstances.
The following non-alphanumeric characters are allowed by the sequencing software:
"_" "-" "(" ")" "{" "}" "+" "."

Past examples of naming that can cause problems:
Samples with very similar names, with same starting letter and letter juxtapositions - {OLG1,OLG2,OGL1,OGL2,OEG1,OEG2...} {SEM1,SERM1,SRM1...}

Past examples of good naming convention:
Samples with names in a numerical order that have a similar prefix - {br-1,br-2,br-3,br-4,br-5,...} {mar15,mar16,mar17,mar18} {2_1,2_2,2_3,2_4,2_5,...}

Please be advised that additional numbers and letters will appear in the file names before the sample names you designated. This is for internal tracking purposes in our lab.

Step 2: Package Templates and Primers for transportation to our facility

Make sure that templates are properly prepared.
Place each template and each primer in a separate tube.
If any DNA template or primer will be used for multiple reactions, you may submit the total amount necessary for all the reactions in one labeled stock tube. For example, 6µL of DNA template times the number of reactions requested = submitted amount in µL.

Step 3: Label your Templates and Primers

Clearly label the lid of each tube you submit with the name of the template or primer it contains. This helps prevent confusion when preparing to sequence your submissions, and helps us to be able to sequence your samples more quickly.
If you are submitting a small order, it also helps to put your lab name on the sides of the tubes in addition to the template or primer name.

Step 4: Submit your sequencing request online

You will need to complete the online sequencing request form for all sequencing reactions every time you submit samples.
Note: You must submit your order and prepare your samples before 11:00am if you want your order to be picked up that day. If you submit an order after 11am but before 12pm, you may call in to let us know and we may still be able to pick up that same day.

Step 5: Leave samples for pickup

If you are on campus and you requested pick-up service when you submitted your order, we will come to your lab to pick up your DNA. Label a plastic bag with your lab's name, put all your samples inside, and leave the bag inside a DNA Sequencing Pickup box in an easily-accessible refrigerator. If it is your first time sequencing with us, when we come to pick up for the first time, we will provide you with a box and plastic bags for future use. If you are unable or do not wish to use our pickup service, you may drop your samples off.
